How to Effectively Prevent Dry, Cracked Hands Care Routine

While most skincare enthusiasts know the importance of applying skincare products to the face, neck, and décolletage, you might not be aware that daily hand care is equally crucial.

The hands are one of the first areas of the body to show signs of aging, with fine lines, wrinkles, and sunspots appearing on the hands, just like they do on the face. The good news is that establishing an anti-aging hand care routine is easier than you might think.

Anti-Aging Hand Care Routine:

Step 1: Exfoliate Once or Twice a Week Just like the skin on your face and body, the skin on your hands can benefit from a weekly or bi-weekly exfoliation. Exfoliating can help remove the buildup of dead skin cells on your hands, making it easier for your skin to absorb moisturizing hand care products, such as serums, oils, and hand creams.

Step 2: Use a Serum In the evening, when you’re applying anti-aging skincare products to your face, consider massaging some serum onto your hands as well. This not only helps rescue any excess product you might accidentally get on your palms but also ensures that your hand’s skin receives extra nourishment.

Step 3: Apply Retinol In addition to applying serum to the top of your hands, you might also consider using a retinol serum as part of your hand care. Retinol is the active form of Vitamin A and can reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines while evening out skin tone. You can incorporate retinol into your daily skincare routine for your face and hands. If you’ve never used retinol on your skin, including your hands, start with a lower concentration and frequency, then gradually increase to prevent irritation. Retinol can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, so be sure to use products containing retinol at night and apply broad-spectrum sunscreen to your hands in the morning. If you’re unsure if retinol is suitable for you, consult a board-certified dermatologist.

Step 4: Nourish the Cuticles Express your love for your cuticles with cuticle oil. You can use oils like almond oil, coconut oil, or argan oil to moisturize your cuticles and nail beds. Simply apply the oil to the cuticles and the tops of your nail beds, then gently massage.

Step 5: Regularly Use Hand Cream Moisturization is key for youthful-looking skin. Use a rich hand cream that leaves your skin feeling and looking hydrated. Hand creams are typically thicker in texture and are designed to target rougher skin areas, which can be very useful if your hands are dry. Keep a bottle of hand cream by the sink or in your bag for easy application after washing your hands.

Step 6: Deeply Treat Your Hands When moisturization alone isn’t enough, we like to go the extra mile with a deep treatment for our hands. Once a week, massage nourishing oil, such as jojoba oil or argan oil, onto your freshly exfoliated and cleaned hands as part of your daily hand care. Wrap them in plastic wrap and cover them with gloves or fuzzy socks to secure everything in place. Leave the wraps on for about an hour (or overnight), then remove them to reveal soft, smooth, and supple hands.

Step 7: Apply Sunscreen You should always (we repeat: always) apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to your hands in the morning and reapply as needed throughout the day, especially after washing your hands. Broad-spectrum sunscreen helps protect your skin from sunburn, sunspots, premature aging signs, and skin cancer, which can all appear on your hands or beneath your nails. Protecting your hands from UV damage is crucial.
